Dottie Montgomery & Jan Krentz Retreat - Feb 2014

Dottie and I are looking forward to seeing each of you again in February, 2014! We have been corresponding about the workshop quilt opportunities, and I wanted to picture some of quilt designs that you thought might be the option for next year's class. It is always a privilege for Dottie and I to see you — a reunion of fun-loving creative free spirits!

Dates: February 15-16-17, 2014 (Sat-Sun-Mon)

Optional: February 18-19-20, 2014 (Tues-Wed-Thurs) if there are adequate registrations & we can fill a 2nd class

WHERE: We are seeking a location closer to the greater East Bay Area. Please share your knowledge of a likely location in that area with Dottie, and she will share the details once the location is selected.

Star Design Options:

Medallion designs are always popular! We have covered the Summer Salsa and Spiral Lone Stars in previous years. Congratulations, all of you who finished your quilts! WHOO-HOO! Our group has several prize-winners among those quilts!

February 2014 workshop ideas!

And now to the quilts you were most interested in trying during a future workshop!

Expanded Broken Star or Touching Star Quilts

The large quilts above were cut with the 6-1/2" Diamond ruler. They can be made with the smaller 3" diamond ruler, and end up roughly 40-50" depending upon the border widths and other finishing details you add.

Touching Split Stars (bed quilt)

The fabrics really make this quilt come to life. This quilt has a large image (roosters) in the squares-on-point; your quilt can feature solid or an overall print, a large-scale floral, or whatever  you have on the shelf to customize the design!

Expanded Touching Stars

Expanded Touching Stars (bed quilt)

This quilt features two colorways of a printed fabric (one was warm colors, one was cool). The diamonds were cut with a color split down the center of the shape. It is roughly 100" square with borders.

Barcelona Fiesta Expanded Broken StarBarcelona Floral Fiesta Expanded Broken Star (bed quilt)

The diamonds are cut from 8 identical layers of one large-scale bold print. The backgrounds change - two tones of yellow, pink & orange, and blue & green at the outside edges. This is a new, unpublished pattern designed by Jan in 2013. Approx. 100" x 100" including borders.

Undersea Expanded Broken Star wallhangingUndersea Expanded Broken Star  (wallhanging)

Smaller example of the quilt (left) cut with the 3" diamond ruler from a variety of undersea ocean-themed printed fabrics. Note the various background fabrics. Approx. 40" x 40" including borders.

Hunter Star Quilts

This is a great design, very versatile, with easy piecing and a variety of techniques. The pictures below are only the "tip of the iceberg" for the design layout. Consider whether you want a medallion, an all-over random "scrappy" design, or an asymmetric contemporary quilt.

 Variable Hunter Star

 Asymmetric African Hunter Star

Asymmetric African Hunter Star

 Variable Hunter Star

A great "stash buster". Bring a stack of older fabrics, and create the blocks from a slick strip-pieced & cross-cut technique. Although the arrangement above is traditional, once your blocks are made, you can arrange them in any setting.

48 - 8" blocks plus borders; apprx. 60" x 78" depending upon borders

The 10" blocks are over-sized to accomodate large-scale printed fabrics such as African, Japanese, Kaffe Fassett or Jane Sassaman Florals, etc. This quilt features template-cut shapes, pieced blocks and simple over-sized triangles for the outer border.

56 - 10" blocks; apprx. 70" x 80" w/o borders.

Starburst Medallion quilts

Ranging in size from wallhangings through bed quilts, diamond shapes cut from a wide range of colorful fabrics, arranged in a variety of settings, and assembled in a systematic method. No Y-seams!

 Colorstripes Starburst bed quilt

Colorstripes Starburst (bed quilt)

This colorful design is cut from a large collection of red, pink, burgundy, green and cream colored fabrics. Some of the diamonds have been fussy-cut to feature unique elements of the fabric designs. Apprx. 65-70" square.  The diamonds in this quilt were cut with the 6-1/2" diamond ruler from striped fabrics. Due to the large shapes, the quilt quickly grows to bed-sized. Assembly is straight-forward without Y Seams. Apprx. 110" square.

Faux Diamond Quilt Designs

Stripes n' Plaids Faux Diamond Quilt Stone Mosaic Dimensional Diamond quilt

Yikes Stripes Faux Diamonds quilt

Bring all the striped fabric you own to class. Cut strips and trade with fellow classmates to create a larger palette. A simple cut creates this whimsical, fun design. Omit the lightest values to create an overall medium-dark scrappy effect.  48" x 75" apprx. size.

Stone Mosaic Dimensional Diamonds

Consistent placement of light, medium and dark values create a dramatic "dimensional" effect, resembling structural diamond shapes. This quilt is 37" x 58" (wall-hanging size), but could be expanded to create a larger bed-size if desired.

After reviewing all of the options, NOW the job is yours! Please write your top two favorite designs, and e-mail them to Dottie Montgomery, who will stay in contact with all interested participants to tell you which quilt (or quilts) will be our class in February!

I am looking forward to spending time with you in the upcoming workshops!

Fondly, Jan Krentz
