Design Inspiration from Everyday Life

View your world with an artist's eye, and learn practical tips for color, fabric selection and design. Jan shares design inspiration images from ordinary sources - and quilts resulting from the inspiration.



Colorwash Hunter Star

Using a new product designed specially for Jan's Hunter Star, learn the technique of composing a scene on a fusible foundation that will sew up into a 15" x 15" finished panel. Workshop focus: fabric selection & placement for the artistic design, construction technique, and quilting recommendations.

The fusible foundation is included in the class kit. Additional foundation may be purchased from Jan.

Colorwash Hunter Star

Monet Water Lily Impressionist Quilt

Create an impressionist-style quilt using 45-degree diamonds. Working from a favorite photo of Claude Monet's paintings, students will design a quilt with a painterly approach using a fabric palette. Workshop attendees will share a small number of fabrics, resulting in a richer collection of patterns, prints and colors for each quilt.

Water lily pads, flowers or other details (student's preference) are added to the pieced quilt top with the student's preferred appliqué method and thread work.

Monet Water Lily Impressionist Quilt

Diamond Landscapes Quilt

Create an impressionist - style quilt using 45-degree diamonds. Working from your own photo, students will design a quilt with a painterly approach, using a fabric palette. If desired, details are added to the pieced quilt top with various forms of embellishment, appliqué and thread work.

The first day of class is spent cutting and laying out the design. Sewing begins on the 2nd day, and hands-on stitching of the water lily pads, flowers or other elements is introduced. Single-day workshops receive a visual presentation that briefly covers the details of construction and embellishment.

Diamond Landscapes Quilt

Colorwash Diamonds Quilt

Sew a beautifully simple quilt using 45-degree diamonds. Workshop focus will include color placement tips, piecing tips, and quilting suggestions.

Jan will provide online fabric selection guidelines for the students registered for this workshop. If desired, quilters may customize their design following class with decorative details added to the pieced quilt top with various forms of embellishment, appliqué and thread work.

 Colorwash Diamonds Quilt

Quick Star Quilt using the Fussy Cutter Diamond Ruler

Create a quick star quilt using fabrics of your choice while learning to sew Y seams. Advance cutting insures farther progress in class.

Purchase of the Fussy Cutter Ruler set required. Lone Star Quilts book purchase is optional.

Several quilt design options in various sizes are available. Fabric requirements will vary depending upon the size of the project, and whether large scale prints are incorporated.

Quick Star Quilt using the Fussy Cutter Diamond Ruler

Colorwash Lone Star Quilt

Create a stunning colorwash Lone Star quilt with strip piecing. Working with a selection of printed fabrics, create pieced strip-sets. Workshop focus will include Lone Star piecing techniques, pattern layout, simple pattern drafting, blocking diamond units and quilt top assembly tips.

If desired, further decorative details may be added to the pieced quilt top with various forms of embellishment, appliqué and thread work.

This is the BASIC Lone Star quilt class. Piece a traditional Lone Star design, and update it with corner and border options. This is a great-looking favorite! Focus on rotary cutting, piecing tips, and overall design layout. Pictured (right) is Jan's classic quilt with beautiful Asian fabrics. Two layout options available.

Spiral Lone Star Quilt Class

Hunter Star - Asymmetric design layout

Create an asymmetric design with a wide range of printed fabrics. The model quilt, Out of Africa, measures 70" x 80" and features a collection of African fabrics. Optional changes in block size or numbers of blocks will increase or decrease the quilt size as desired.

Hearts At Home Wallhanging

Incorporate a central panel of Danish Hearts, with houses in the corners and an outer border of Flying Geese blocks.
